Born in St. Mary's parish in Louisiana, Royal Robertson began to draw even as a child. Traveling across the country, Royal worked as a field hand and a sign painter before returning to his home in Baldwin, Louisiana to care for his ailing mother. An unsuccessful marriage and a slow descent into mental despair soon found Royal living alone, where he turned his home into an incredible environment covered with his signs and paintings that illustrated his raw emotions lashing out at the world. Robertson covered every scrap of paper, poster board, and surface with a fantastic perspective of his imagination, influenced by his ex-wife, his Bible, science fiction, architecture, comic strips, and skin magazines. His calendar posters documenting his daily dreams and observations reveal a sad and tortured personality, who, none the less, came alive with kindness and consideration every time we visited.
