1920 - 2006

One of 12 children, Mose Tolliver was born in Alabama in 1915 to sharecropper parents. He worked as a tenant farmer, a gardener, and at a furniture company until an accident crushed his legs in the late 1960's. While recovering, Mose discovered his unique talent to paint - which is what he has done with most of his time ever since. Even in his 80s, Mose T. continues to produce beautiful works, frequently painting animals, self-portraits, people, and abstracts, even on furniture. Mose has become the most widely exhibited and collected living black southern folk artist of all time.
