After her birth in 1957 in Germany, Melissa Polhamus and her family soon moved to the United States, where she spent her youth and went to school. After a wide variety of jobs that included working on Wall Street, a defensive plant, and as a greens keeper on a golf course, Melissa settled with her husband Ray in a sea side community in Virginia. It was here in 1990, out of depression and a need to express, that Melissa began to draw. She began first with just pen and ink, and later, as the drawings became more complicated, she added watercolors to create fragmented, anguished pictures that dramatically illustrate the conflicts in her life. Since At Home Gallery "discovered" Melissa in the early 1990s, we have watched her career and acceptance soar as many major institutions, scholars, and collectors have recognized her works.
