Born in 1907 (died in 1985), Leroy Person spent his entire life in eastern North Carolina. His work at a local sawmill was cut short by health concerns, and after retirement, Person began to carve and draw. Person drew figures, animals, and tools such as sawblades and wrenches, blending organic images of floral and fauna with the tools of his trade. Robert Lynch, who sold and gave a large collection of artwork to the Wesleyan College in North Carolina, purchased most of his work. Person's mysterious and evocative work is often compared to works found in the African Niger River region. He has been recognized nationally as one of the 32 artists in the traveling show, "Self Taught Artists of the 20th Century." At Home Gallery acquired a number of his drawings at auction and is excited about making the work of this rare and important artist available for the first time.
