The Huichol Indians (pronounced Wee-Chol) can be found in
the most remote regions of the Sierra Madre Mountains in
Mexico. Their tribe numbers around 10,000 and they are known
as a primitive nation still holding on ancient culture and
customs. The Huichols embody their Gods and Mythology in
each piece of their art work.
Their art serves as ceremonial pieces, as the pages of
their history, the explanation of the world they live in,
and to the forces governing their lives.
Each piece of art has been created by Huichol Shamans while
in altered states of consciousness, sharing their visions
while experiencing the scared peyote. Each color, every
line, every symbol has a meaning carried out in the artwork
they create.
Each yarn painting is one of a kind and are made from colored
yarns pressed into beeswax & resin coated board. Each painting,
depending on size and complexity can take anywhere from
one month to six months to complete.
Works offered are by renowned Huichol artist, Jose Luis
Chez. Each piece comes with a hand written explanation of
the work on the reverse side of the wooden canvas. I will
include a translation and any background information relating
to the work. These and our other art work from Mexico have
been directly collected from the artists in their native
studios.
